With Quad installed, server owners can edit the item tags that Quad adds, and chests, shulker boxes and hoppers accept the same tag-based wooden chest set.

What it does

Quad adds a large set of item tags and changes some recipes so that boats with chests, shulker boxes and hoppers take wooden chests from a shared tag rather than only the vanilla chest item. The tags live under data/c/tags/items as JSON files, and the tag list has moved to the wiki, so the wiki is the place to check which tags exist.

Data packs can change the tags as well, so other mods can read the same tags and build on them. Quad is required by 7 other mods, including More Chests Variants (MCV), More Crafting Tables (MCT), More Bookshelves Variants, More Furnaces Variants and More Chests Variants - Biomes O' Plenty, so it is mostly a dependency for content mods. The server must run it, and clients may add it too. Files exist for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 31 release versions, 1.18 – 26.2, and the code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Wooden chest tag

Boats with chests, shulker boxes and hoppers accept any item in the wooden chest tag, not only minecraft:chest.

  2. Fire aspect for flammables

TNT, creepers, campfires and candles are lit by fire aspect, in versions before 1.21.

  3. Fire-resistant obsidian items

Items made from obsidian and Nether wood do not burn in fire or lava, matching netherite items.

  4. Crying obsidian portals

Crying obsidian can be used to build a Nether portal frame, with the portal opened the same way as with obsidian.

Use cases

Tag-based mod support

Mod authors can read the shared tags from Quad and skip maintaining their own lists of chests and similar items.

Custom server rules

Server owners can edit the JSON tag files or add data packs to change which items count as chests.

Who it’s for: Pack makers, server owners and mod authors who want shared item tags for chests, shulker boxes and similar blocks.

How it compares

Full comparison

Craftable Name Tag is open source under the MIT License and published for 1.18.2 – 26.1.2 on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt; the server must run it, and clients may skip it. Real Obsidian is a client and server mod under the BSD 2-Clause License, open source and published for 1.20 – 26.2 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, and it changes the obsidian behavior that Quad leaves in place. No Nether Teleport requires both sides, is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later and covers 1.18.2 – 1.21.1.

Questions

Does Quad have to be installed on the client?

No. The server must run Quad, while players may add it or leave it out.

Which mods need Quad?

Seven catalog mods require it, for example More Chests Variants (MCV) and More Crafting Tables (MCT).

Can server owners change the tags without a mod update?

Data packs can change the tags, so a server can adjust which items count as wooden chests without a new Quad build.

Does Fire Aspect work on the latest versions?

The fire aspect feature is listed for versions before 1.21 only, so check the wiki for the current state on 1.21 and later.

In the catalog
