PotionControl

by Nischhelm

PotionControl gives Forge servers and clients a way to edit the properties of vanilla and modded potions and potion types, from one set of JSON files.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.12.2

What it does

On first startup the mod generates JSON files for each potion and potion type it finds. These files are created in an inactive state, so no change applies until a file is moved into the active folder. Once active, a file can set a potion's display name and description, whether it counts as a good or bad effect, its liquid color for the tooltip, which curative items remove it, its attribute modifiers, and its maximum amplifier and duration. Instant and repeating behavior, the repeating period, and how stacking with an existing effect is resolved can be set as well, including whether a longer duration wins over a higher amplifier.

The mod can also unregister specific potions and potion types, and it lists the effects with their amplifiers and durations that remain brewable. A global option changes the brewing time for all potions. The author built it on the same mixin backbone as Enchantment Control, so its approach to editing vanilla and custom potions matches that mod. It requires FermiumBooter and BetterConfig, and it is open source under the MIT License. Files are published for 1.12.2, with 1.1.1 as the latest Forge file, released 2026-09-25.

Key features

  1. Potion property editing

Name, description, good or bad classification, liquid color, curative items, attribute modifiers and limits can be set per potion.

  2. Potion type control

Potion types can be unregistered, and specific effects with set amplifiers and durations can be kept or removed from brewing.

  3. Stacking and timing rules

Instant and repeating behavior, repeating period, and whether duration or amplifier takes priority when an effect is combined are configurable.

  4. Global brewing time

One option changes the brewing time of every potion, applied in the same configuration.

  5. Generated inactive files

Starter JSON files are produced on first run and stay inactive until moved into the active folder, so nothing changes by accident.

Questions

What does PotionControl require?

FermiumBooter and BetterConfig are required. Both must be installed next to PotionControl on Forge 1.12.2.

Does the mod have to be on both client and server?

Yes. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Why are the generated files not applied right away?

The starter files are created as inactive. A file takes effect only after it is moved into the active folder, so the author's edits are not overwritten.

What the author says

Requires FermiumBooter and BetterConfig. I initially made this mod because i just wanted to unregister certain potions and potion types, but then it kinda evolved to a full control mod just like Enchantment Control.
