Pick-BlockState
by Minenash
With Pick-BlockState, middle-clicking a block in creative mode copies its full blockstate, not only the block type, so a stair keeps its facing and a lit campfire stays lit.
What it does
Vanilla pick-block copies only the block type. Pick-BlockState extends it by also copying the blockstate, which covers properties such as facing direction, redstone power state, whether a campfire is lit, and waterlogging. Holding Ctrl while pick-blocking also copies block entity data for containers like chests, hoppers, droppers and furnaces, so the picked item carries the contents or settings the placed block would have. The example in the author text is a stair: Ctrl plus pick-block returns an upside-down stair facing west in the same way as the stair being looked at.
The mod is a client-side utility for Fabric and is released under the MIT License as open source. Because only the client needs it, players can use it on a server that does not have it installed, and it changes nothing server-side. Files are published for Fabric across 27 release versions, 1.16 – 1.21.3, and the latest file is 1.0.0+1.21 for 1.21.3, dated 2024-07-08. The source code and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Blockstate copying
Pick-blocking copies the full blockstate, including facing, powered and lit states and waterlogging, not only the block type.
Block entity data with Ctrl
Holding Ctrl in creative mode copies block entity data for chests, hoppers, droppers, furnaces and campfires.
Vanilla pick-block kept
The default middle-click pick-block behaviour stays in place, and the extra behaviour is added on top of it.
Covers placed block states
The copied item reproduces the orientation and state of the block being looked at, so the placed copy matches it.

How it compares
PickyMiner is a Fabric mod for 26.1.2 – 26.2 and is open source under the MIT License, but it is aimed at block picking in a different way. Better Clipboard is a Fabric mod for 1.20.2 – 26.3 that is not open source and is licensed as All rights reserved. Sword Blocking is open source under the MIT License and works on Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt, covering 1.16 – 1.21.8, so it reaches more loaders than this mod. The environment of all three is client-side only, the same as Pick-BlockState.
