Photography Redeveloped

by tesseract-two

Photography Redeveloped gives players a camera item that takes in-world photos, which are stored as maps and can be printed on Photographic Paper.

FabricServer required, client optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.9 – 26.1.2

What it does

Players craft a camera from Spyglass and copper ingots, then use it to take photos of the world. Right-clicking opens a viewfinder, a second right-click takes the picture, and the scroll wheel zooms in and out of the camera interface. Taking a photo consumes one sheet of Photographic Paper, which is crafted from paper and cyan, magenta and yellow dye, and the result is a Photograph item.

The mod is a fork of Bloufin's Photography, continued and updated for modern versions, and it uses some code from Image2Map to render photos onto maps. Photographs remain as vanilla maps with custom image data after the mod is removed. The server must run the mod for players to take photos, and clients without it can still join, including Bedrock players through Geyser. Fabric API is required, and the code is under the MIT License, so the project is open source.

Files are published for Fabric only, for six game versions 1.21.9 – 26.1.2, with 1.0.5+mc26.1 as the latest file for 26.1.2. Snapshot builds are published as well. The mod is server required and client optional, so the server must run it while players may leave it out, though a client needs it to take photos.

Key features

  1. Camera item

A craftable camera opens a viewfinder on right-click and takes a photo on a second right-click.

  2. Photographic Paper

Each photo uses one sheet of Photographic Paper, crafted from dye and paper, and produces a Photograph item.

  3. Zoom control

The scroll wheel adjusts zoom while the camera is open, and pressing Escape leaves the camera interface.

  4. Photographs as maps

Photos are rendered onto maps, and they stay readable as vanilla maps after the mod is uninstalled.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want to document builds and events with photos, and server owners who can run the mod and let clients join without it.

How it compares

Full comparison
