OptiPainting

by isxander

With OptiPainting installed, the painting entities on a client draw fewer faces, since the back and hidden sides of each painting are skipped.

What it does

OptiPainting is a rendering optimization for paintings. Each painting is built from faces, and the sides and back that the player never sees are still drawn by vanilla. This mod removes the faces that cannot be seen and keeps the front of the painting and its frame, which lowers the number of vertices sent for each painting block. Data-driven paintings introduced in 24w18a can be custom sizes up to 16x16, and the same reduction applies to them.

The change is a client-side only mod, so it needs to be installed on the player side and nothing else. A vanilla painting uses 24 vertices per block, while OptiPainting uses 8, a reduction of about 66 percent. The visual difference is small in most worlds, since only a few paintings usually appear in view at once, but it is free to run and costs nothing on the server. OptiPainting is open source and is distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 or later. It is published for Fabric only, with 12 release versions 1.19 – 1.20.6 and 1.0.0+1.20.6 as the latest file for 1.20.6.

Key features

  1. Hidden face removal

Faces of a painting block that are never visible, such as the back and the inner sides, are not rendered.

  2. Fewer vertices

The mod reduces the vertices used for each painting block from 24 to 8, which lowers the rendering work per painting.

  3. Frame preservation

The indented frame edge that sticks out from the wall is kept, so the painting looks the same from the front.

  4. Custom painting sizes

Data-driven paintings up to 16x16 use the same optimized rendering path as the vanilla sizes.

What the author says

If you have a look at a painting, you'll notice that on the sides there is a 2px indented frame, so it sticks out from the wall. In vanilla, these faces are rendered for every single block that the painting is made of. This is a waste of resources, as the faces are never visible. This mod fixes that by not rendering…
