On Respawn Commands

by anIonianOnion

On Respawn Commands lets a server run console commands each time a player respawns, configured through a Forge config file rather than a command block.

ForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.19.2 – 1.21.10

What it does

Respawn triggers are set in the mod's config. Each time a player respawns on a server, the commands in the config are executed, so server owners can attach actions to respawning without building a command block or adding a datapack.

The config holds two lists. Commands in the first list run on the server with the same operator level as a command block. Commands in the second list run directly as the player, with whatever operator level that player already has. A server can therefore make a player run a command the player has no permission for, by using a placeholder that is replaced with the player's name when the command runs.

The mod was made to simplify creating respawn command triggers without needing a server-side script. Modpack developers can type the command they want executed into the list directly, which keeps setup inside the config. Files exist for Forge, with builds covering 1.19.2 – 1.21.10 and the latest file for 1.20.1, released 2025-12-02.

Key features

  1. Respawn-triggered commands

Commands listed in the config run every time a player respawns on the server.

  2. Server-level command list

One list runs commands with the same operator level as a command block.

  3. Player-level command list

A second list runs commands as the player, with the player's own operator level.

  4. Player name placeholder

A placeholder in a command is replaced with the respawning player's name before the command runs.

  5. Config-based setup

Triggers are written as plain entries in the config, so no datapack or command block is needed.

How it compares

Full comparison

HungerKeep is a Forge mod for 1.16.5 that can be installed on the client or the server, and is not open source. Hardcore Respawn works on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.19.2 – 1.21.1, is client and server, and is released under the MIT License. Limited Respawns is server-side only and covers 1.19.2 – 1.21.3 on all three loaders, but it uses a custom license, so the two mods differ in their licensing and in what they change.

Questions

Does On Respawn Commands need to be installed on the client?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own.

Which Minecraft versions does On Respawn Commands support?

Files cover 1.19.2 – 1.21.10 on Forge. The published builds are for 1.19.2, 1.20.1 and 1.21.10, and the latest file targets 1.20.1.

Can a player run a command without having permission for it?

Yes. Commands in the server-level list run with command block operator level, so a player can trigger them even without the matching permission.

What the author says

With this mod, modpack developers can directly type a list of any command they want to execute from any installed mod that registers them into the config, and they will be executed whenever a player respawns. There are two lists: one is the list of commands executed as the server (same op level as command blocks)…
