No Mob Farms

by orlouge

No Mob Farms is a server-side Utility mod that slows down natural and spawner mob spawning in chunks where mobs die too often.

FabricForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.18.1 – 1.21.8

What it does

The mod implements countermeasures against mob farms on the server. It tracks how many mobs die in a chunk and, when deaths are frequent, lowers the spawn rate there. Naturally spawned mobs are covered, including those produced by mob spawner structure generation, and mob spawner blocks get their own slowdown settings.

Behaviour is controlled by a nomobfarm.properties file. The default values are moderately aggressive: a few deaths in a short time curb spawning quickly, and the algorithm forgets earlier deaths at a slow recovery rate. Lower slowdown and recovery values make it more conservative, a higher maximum wait makes it stricter, and setting natural max wait to 0 disables the natural spawn feature.

Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 8 release versions, 1.18.1 – 1.21.8, under the MIT License. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own. Fabric builds need Fabric API, and the source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Natural spawn slowdown

Naturally spawned mobs in a chunk are delayed once that chunk shows frequent deaths, including structures that generate spawners such as Guardians.

  2. Spawner slowdown

Mob spawner blocks are slowed separately, and the default settings only react after at least 15 mobs die.

  3. Chunk memory

Death data for a chunk is kept for a configurable time, 259200 seconds by default, so an area left alone is restored later.

  4. Adjustable rates

Slowdown rate, recovery rate, maximum wait and minimum deaths are set in the properties file, letting server owners tune the curb.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners who want to limit mob farms without removing natural spawning. Single-player players do not need it.

Spawn Egg Information is client-side only, not open source, under the MIT License and published for 1.18.2 – 1.21.1 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, so it changes only what players see. Mob Farm Trap is a Forge mod for 1.20 – 1.20.6, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and it needs both the client and the server. Mob Spawner Tweaks is a Fabric mod for 1.21 – 1.21.11 that is not open source, with an optional client or server side.

Questions

Does No Mob Farms need to be installed on the client?

No. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Which loader should a server use?

Files exist for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Fabric builds need Fabric API, while the latest Forge file is 1.6.6 for 1.20.1.

Can the slowdown be turned off?

Yes. Setting natural max wait to 0 in nomobfarm.properties disables the natural spawn feature.
