Nimbu's: Scabbards lets a player sheathe a sword on the hip, so that it leaves the hand and the held slot free.

What it does

The mod adds scabbards that hold a sword and display it on the hip rather than on the back. Scabbards are crafted from three leather and one string, and a second recipe with one leather and two string gives a smaller weapon holster for storing tools. Scabbards can be dyed in the same way leather armour is, and a dye can be added to a scabbard in the crafting table.

Pressing the R key draws or sheathes a sword held in a scabbard, and the item that was in the hand moves elsewhere in the inventory, so the inventory stays organized. Each scabbard carries a limited number of swords. The mod requires Curios API, and it runs on client and server, so both the server and every player need it. It is published for NeoForge 1.21.1 only, and the open source code is licensed under the Apache License 2.0.

Carrying swords in a melee build

A sword in a scabbard stays on the hip, so the hand can hold a bow, a torch or a tool.
