Need to Breathe!

by McJty

Need to Breathe! makes the air in the overworld unbreathable with poison, so players need protection such as a helmet or an enclosed purified area.

ForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.12.1 – 1.12.2

What it does

The mod turns the air in the world into a poisonous environment that players must manage. Breathing without protection builds poison levels, and the effects a player receives scale with those levels. Passive mobs are affected by the poison by default, while hostile mobs are killed by it and grant regeneration to nearby players.

A purifier block runs on RF power and coal to clean the air in a closed area, and an enclosed space must be sealed to work well. A helmet reduces poison intake by 30 percent by default, which lowers the damage without removing it completely. By default the poison applies in the overworld only, and the nether and other dimensions can be configured to match the same rules.

Need to Breathe! requires McJtyLib on Forge and is open source under the MIT License. Files cover 1.12.1 and 1.12.2, and the latest build for 1.12.2 is 1.12-0.4.0, published on 2023-01-26. Installation covers the server and each player's game.

Key features

  1. Poisonous air

The overworld air becomes unbreathable, and poison builds up in players who go without protection.

  2. Purifier block

A purifier consumes RF and coal to clean the air inside a closed area, making enclosed bases safe.

  3. Protective helmet

A helmet cuts poison intake by 30 percent by default, though it does not remove the poison entirely.

  4. Configurable effects

Effects scale with poison level, and most values can be adjusted in the configuration files.

Use cases

Modpack story

Modpack makers can build a specific story around a world where breathing is dangerous and players must rely on purified air.

Biosphere domes

With The Lost Cities, the default setup works well when biosphere domes are built to contain fresh air.

Who it’s for: Modpack makers and server owners who want survival worlds with an air-based challenge. The mod is still in beta, and most behavior can be tuned before a pack is released.
