Nature's Appetite

by TMA

Players who keep livestock in a pen can let Nature's Appetite handle the feeding, since animals in its scope seek out and eat dropped breeding food on their own.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverGNU General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

Nature's Appetite adds an automatic feeding goal to animals. Animals that are not in love look for food items dropped nearby and eat them, and the mod can enter love mode from that feeding. Adult feeding is gated by a breeding cooldown and an age check, which stops animals from consuming food continuously without producing offspring. Baby animals also eat on their own, and a configurable setting speeds up their growth.

Which animals take part is controlled by tags. A whitelist selects entity types, a blacklist always overrides it, and both are written as JSON tag files in the mod's data folder. The main options live in a server config file, and the food quality table is a reloadable JSON data map, so server owners can change how each food behaves without a restart. The mod runs on Forge and NeoForge, for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, and it needs to be on both the client and the server. It is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Key features

  1. Automatic feeding

Animals seek and eat dropped breeding food without the player having to place it by hand.

  2. Food quality data

Each food item can add a healing effect, a love-time bonus, a growth bonus or an extra baby chance, set in a JSON file.

  3. Tag-based control

Entity type tags define which animals are included, and a blacklist tag takes priority over the whitelist.

  4. Owner credit

Breeding is attributed to the player who fed the animal, so the herd keeps track of its owner.

Use cases

Managing a breeding pen

A farm can keep animals breeding while the player works elsewhere, with feeding and cooldowns handled by the mod.

Who it’s for: Players who run automated or semi-automated farms on Forge or NeoForge, and server owners who want to control which animals feed on their own through data files.

Questions

Does Nature's Appetite need to be installed on the server?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Which loaders and versions are supported?

Files are published for Forge and NeoForge, for 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, with version 1.0.0 as the latest file on each loader.

How are the animals selected?

Entity type tags control inclusion. A whitelist enables the animals it lists, and a blacklist always overrides the whitelist.
