Villager Names
by Sorcell
Villager Names gives unnamed villagers random names drawn from a list of 337 entries, and it can also rename villagers that already have one.
What it does
Villagers generate with a random name from a built-in list. The names are grouped into common, uncommon and rare tiers, so most villagers get a common name and a few receive a rarer one. The mod works through a datapack, which means a world or server can use it without installing a separate mod for each loader.
Existing villagers that have no name are renamed when the datapack applies, and villagers that already carry a name can be changed as well. The name lists are kept in the source code, which is publicly available, so a server owner can check every entry before enabling the datapack. The names are chosen to stay close to the setting of the base game and avoid modern references.
The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and a datapack build is offered too. The server must run the datapack for names to appear, while players may add the mod on the client and nothing more is needed on their side. Files cover 1.20.2 – 1.21.11, with 1.3 for 1.21.11 as the latest release, and the code is licensed under All rights reserved, so it is not open source.
Key features
Random villager names
Villagers receive a name from the built-in list when they generate, without any command or setup from the player.
Rarity tiers
Names are sorted into common, uncommon and rare groups, so the mix of names in a village varies.
Renaming existing villagers
Villagers that were already in the world without a name can be given one, and named villagers can be changed as well.
Datapack delivery
The names are applied through a datapack, so the same behavior works on a server without a client-side install.
