Munchables

by Ramixin

Munchables is a Fabric library that lets a data pack change how long food and other items take to eat, one JSON file per item.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.20.4

What it does

Munchables works as a light-weight, data-driven API. A data pack defines the eat time of an item by placing a JSON file under the namespace folder munchables, named after the item id, and the file follows a fixed schema. An example in the author text changes the eat time of one item this way. The author notes the approach is deprecated on Minecraft 1.20.5 and later, where item components cover the same job. Fabric API is required, and the mod is published for Fabric only.

A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. Files cover four game versions, and the latest file, 1.0.0, targets 1.20.4. The code is licensed under the MIT License. The author links a wiki with a more detailed walk through and a contact page on the GitHub project.

Key features

  1. Eat time per item

A data pack sets the time an item takes to eat by naming the item id in a JSON file.

  2. Data pack structure

Definitions sit in a data pack folder under namespace munchables, one file per item.

  3. Fixed JSON schema

Each file follows a schema the author documents, so the values can be checked before use.

  4. Wiki walk through

A wiki gives a longer step by step guide for writing the files.

Use cases

Modpack tuning

A modpack author can slow down or speed up eating for chosen foods without a code change.

Server data packs

A server owner can ship eat time changes as a data pack that players receive with the world.

Who it’s for: Data pack authors and modpack makers who want to change eat times on Fabric without writing Java code. Players who only want new foods should look elsewhere.

Does the server need Munchables?

Yes. Every player and the server need a copy of the mod.

Does Munchables work on Minecraft 1.20.5 and later?

The author notes the approach is deprecated on 1.20.5 and later, where item components handle eat times. Files exist only for older builds.
