More Mob Variants
by nyuppo
Cats, horses and other older mobs spawn in more colors and patterns once More Mob Variants is installed, so the world stops looking uniform.
What it does
New variants are added to existing mobs that all looked the same before. Each variant is stored in the entity's NBT data, so it stays the same across sessions and for every player on a server. Variants include Gray Tabby, Handsome, Tortoiseshell, Gold Crested, Midnight and Skewbald, and a Skeleton variant can appear when spawned in the Nether. A rare Duck variant is also included.
All variants and their features are defined in data files, which lets server owners and pack makers change spawn rules and appearances through datapacks. The mod needs Fabric API on Fabric, and the Forge build depends on its own setup. The code is released under the CC0 1.0 Universal license, which places the work in the public domain, and its source code and issue tracker are public. The mod is built for 1.19 – 1.21 with nine release versions, and the latest Fabric file targets 1.21.
Key features
Color and pattern variants
Older mobs gain new looks, including Gray Tabby, Tortoiseshell, Gold Crested and Skewbald, so herds and pets differ from one another.
Persistent variant data
Each variant is saved in NBT, so the appearance of an animal does not change after it has been generated.
Nether skeleton variant
Skeletons spawned in the Nether can take a separate variant, which shows up in those areas only.
Rare duck variant
A duck variant appears only occasionally, so it is an uncommon find among ordinary ducks.

Use cases
Varied animal farms
Farms and pastures can show several looks side by side, which helps players tell animals apart.
Customized spawn rules
Pack makers can change which variants appear and where, because the variants are defined in datapacks.
Who it’s for: Players who want more visual variety among common mobs, and server owners who want variants to stay consistent for all players and to be adjusted through datapacks.
