MediaToast

by technicfan

MediaToast shows the media playing on the operating system in Minecraft's own music toast, using the vanilla toast feature.

FabricClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.6 – 26.3

What it does

MediaToast reads the current playing media through the operating system's media remote interface over MPRIS on D-Bus, and displays it as a music toast. By default the player selected as active is shown, and other players that are playing can be cycled through. The mod requires Fabric API and is published for Fabric only, across 11 release versions under the MIT License, so it is open source.

The mod was originally based on MprisCustomHud, and its first aim was to learn how MPRIS works over D-Bus using dbus-java and mixins. The client-side only environment means that only the client needs it, and servers run without it. The source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Media info as a toast

The title and details of the playing media appear through the vanilla music toast, rather than a separate overlay.

  2. Cycling between players

When several media players are active, the toast can be cycled through them, while the default player stays the one selected as active.

  3. Toggle in sound settings

The option to enable music toasts sits in the vanilla sound settings, under the first place in the list, and tooltips explain each setting.

  4. Flatpak sandbox access

A Flatpak build of Minecraft needs the MPRIS session bus name added through Flatseal before the media can be read.

Questions

Does MediaToast need Fabric API?

Yes. Fabric API is required, and the mod is published for Fabric only.

Which Minecraft versions does MediaToast support?

Files cover 11 release versions, and the range is in the game versions list. Music toasts did not exist before that range began, so older versions are outside it.

Does a Flatpak Minecraft install need extra setup?

Yes. The org.mpris.MediaPlayer2 session bus name must be added through Flatseal so the mod can read the media info.
