MCPings
by Dyvinia
MCPings lets players place location pings in the world, and the pings show up on other players' screens with the sender's name and distance.
What it does
Pinging adds a location marker system to the game. A player places a ping, and it appears to others within a configurable range, shown as a marker with the pinger's username and the distance to it. Pings that fall outside the screen edge are shown at the border, so a location stays visible when it is out of view. The range that counts as nearby can be set in the client configuration.
Each ping type is tied to what the player pinged, such as a position, an entity or a block, and each type has its own color that can be changed in the config. The server-side part runs on Fabric and Quilt, and it requires oωo (owo-lib). A compatibility plugin for Spigot-based servers lets players without the mod see pings as well.
MCPings is released under the MIT License and is open source, with its source code and issue tracker public. Files target 1.20 – 1.20.2, and the latest Fabric and Quilt builds are 1.0.0-alpha3 for 1.20.2, released on 2024-01-04 on the alpha channel. Client and server both need the mod, so the server and every player install it.
Key features
Location pings
Players place pings at a location that others can see, and each ping is drawn with the sender's name and its distance.
Distance filtering
Only pings within a configurable distance from the viewer are displayed, which keeps the screen readable on busy servers.
Off-screen indicators
Pings outside the field of view are displayed at the screen edge, pointing toward their location.
Ping types and colors
Different ping types are used for different targets, and their colors can be changed in the config file.

How it compares
PingCC is a Fabric-only mod for 1.20 – 1.21.1 that runs on client and server and is open source under the MIT License, so it covers a longer version range on one loader. Client Ping is a Quilt-only, client-side only mod for 1.19.4 – 1.20.1 released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so no server install is needed. Pingspam is server-side only, works on Fabric and Quilt for 1.16.4 – 1.21.8, and is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.
