Backrooms

by lullaby

Backrooms is a world generation mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt that adds an endless yellow maze of level 0 to the world, reached only through lonely doors.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalGNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.21 – 26.3

What it does

Backrooms adds a dimension of endless, unsettling corridors, empty hallways and abandoned rooms built around the liminal spaces of the Backrooms idea. Hostile creatures lurk in the darkness, and a player who stops moving or turns the wrong way can be hunted down. The only way into and out of the Backrooms is through doors scattered through the world, and some of them lead to an endless nightmare while others are the only chance to escape.

The mod is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 or later, and its source code is public. Files target the game versions 1.21 – 26.3, with seven release versions in total: 1.21, 1.21.1, 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3. The server needs the mod, while a client can join without it. Builds for every listed loader are dated 2026-10-07 for version 1.1.1 on 26.3.

Key features

  1. Endless yellow maze

The current release contains only Level 0, the iconic endless yellow maze, with its hallways and silent rooms.

  2. Hostile creatures

Creatures hide in the darkness of the maze and hunt down players who stop or wander too far.

  3. Doors as the only exit

Lonely doors scattered through the world are the only way into and out of the Backrooms.

  4. Suffocate enchantment

A rare chest can hold an exclusive Suffocate enchantment for axes and maces, which forces a struck mob to the ground until it escapes or dies.

Use cases

Loot in the maze

Loot chests in the Backrooms hold treasures also found in Ancient Cities, Mineshafts and End Cities.

Who it’s for: Players who want a horror exploration experience in a survival world or on a server. Server owners need to install the mod, since creating a server of their own is a lengthy, costly process that the author describes as tedious.
