by Lprogrammer
Login is a server-side datapack that makes each player register a numerical password on first join and then log in on later joins.
What it does
Players who join a server with Login are asked to type a numerical password the first time they connect, and to enter the same password on every later visit. Until a player has entered the password, the player is held in spectator mode at the last recorded position, which keeps an unverified account from acting on the server. The datapack is most useful on servers that run with online_mode=false, where anyone can join under any username.
Login is installed by copying Login.zip into the datapack folder of a specific world and enabling it with the datapack enable command. It is published as a datapack rather than a loader-specific mod, so it can be placed in worlds for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt, and it is released under the MIT License. Only the server needs it, so clients connect without installing anything. The mod covers 1.21 – 26.3 across 17 release versions.
Because the datapack is not presented as a secure authentication system, the author recommends regular world backups. Conflicts with other installed content can wipe player data, so a backup should be taken before the datapack is added to an existing world.

How it compares
MixAuth is a NeoForge-only mod for 1.21.1 – 26.3, server-side only and released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, so it is open source and needs a NeoForge server. SafeAuth runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.16.5 – 26.2 and is client-side only under the MIT License, so it is not an alternative for server installs. Login, by contrast, is server-side and works with any of the four loaders because it is a datapack.

What the author says
When the player joins your server for the second time they will be asked for the same password they once provided. Until the player has provided a password they will be put into spectator mode and locked at their last position to prevent the player from causing any harm.
