LifeSteal

by bradbot1

LifeSteal changes how health is lost and gained on a Fabric server, so players who die lose a heart and can gain one back.

FabricServer-side onlyApache License 2.0Open source1.17.1 – 1.18.1

What it does

The mod is a server-side implementation of a customisable LifeSteal survival mode. Players lose health when they die and can regain it through items and crafting. Only the server needs LifeSteal installed; players join without installing anything, and the environment is server-side only.

Server owners can adjust the rules through a configuration file named lifesteal.json in the config directory. A command lets moderators view and change a player's lost health without a server restart. A punishment setting can be turned off so players who reach zero health are not banned. Version 2.0.0 is the latest file, built for 1.18.1, and the code is open source under the Apache License 2.0. Files target 1.17.1, 1.18 and 1.18.1.

Key features

  1. Heart gain on death

Entities gain a heart when they are killed, so health can be taken from one player and given to another.

  2. Crafting with health levels

Recipes can lock certain health levels, so a recipe with a lost-health requirement can only be crafted at that level.

  3. Custom recipe requirements and results

Three new requirements and three new results are added for custom recipes, including the gained heart item.

  4. Marking items

Marks are applied to item stacks through a set of sub marks, with messages sent to the user when a mark succeeds or fails.

  5. Lost health API

A LifeStealable interface lets other mods read and set a player's lost health when their own mechanics change it.

Use cases

Moderating player health

Moderators can adjust a player's health with a command, without restarting the server.

Who it’s for: Server owners running a LifeSteal survival world, and mod developers who want to integrate lost health with their own content.

Player Health Indicators is a Fabric mod that runs client-side only and is open source under the MIT License, with builds for 1.16 – 1.21, so it shows health rather than changing it. Slore SMP Tweaks is a Fabric mod for client and server, released under the MIT License for 1.20 – 1.21.4. mcsudo is server-side only, open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, and covers Fabric and Quilt for 1.20 – 1.21.3, so it can run where LifeSteal cannot.

Questions

Does LifeSteal need to be installed on every player's client?

No. Server owners install it, and players connect with no copy of their own. Only the server runs the mod.

Which game versions does LifeSteal support?

Files exist for 1.17.1, 1.18 and 1.18.1. The latest file is v2.0.0 for 1.18.1, published on 2022-02-01.

Can a player be banned when their health reaches zero?

The punishment setting can be turned off in the config. The author notes that this moved to the punishment config, so server owners should check there.
