by notblue

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalCreative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.01.20 – 26.3

What it does

The mod adds recipes for recycling leather armor pieces, leather horse armor, item frames and glow item frames, plus smelting of rotten flesh into leather and deconstructing leather and rabbit hide. Bundles can be made from leather as well, with four bundles giving back three leather. Versions 1.20 – 1.21.1 include the bundle recipe, which later builds moved to the 1.21.2 release.

Leather Recycling is a server-side mod: the server needs it, while players may add it on their own clients. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, and a data pack version is also offered for server platforms. Files exist for 1.20 – 26.3, with 2.3+mod for 26.3 as the latest build, released 2026-09-27. The mod is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license and is not open source, although its source code and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Armor recycling

Leather helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots can be broken down into leather again.

  2. Horse armor and item frames

Leather horse armor, item frames and glow item frames are included in the recycling recipes.

  3. Smelting and deconstruction

Rotten flesh can be smelted into leather, and leather or rabbit hide can be deconstructed.

  4. Leather bundles

Four bundles return three leather, so unused bundles are not wasted.

Use cases

Leather-heavy servers

Server owners who want leather from armor and mobs to go further can use the recycling recipes to reclaim materials.

Who it’s for: Server owners running survival or economy worlds, where leather is scarce and players craft a lot of armor, horse gear or item frames.

Questions

Does the server need Leather Recycling?

Yes. The server must run it, while players may leave it out. Players can add it on their clients, but it is optional for them.

Which loaders does Leather Recycling support?

Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. A data pack version is also available for server platforms.

Does the bundle recipe work on every version?

No. The bundle recipe is included in versions 1.20 – 1.21.1. It was introduced in 1.21.2, so later builds handle bundles differently.
