Keep Inventory Updated

by nugrevan

Keep Inventory Updated changes what a player keeps on death, so the hotbar, offhand and armor slots stay while other items drop.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalMIT License1.21.11 – 26.3

What it does

On death the mod keeps everything in the hotbar, the offhand and the armor slots, and only the rest of the inventory drops. Experience is handled as a separate question, and the player's kept items follow the vanilla keepInventory rules as far as the mod leaves them alone. Items enchanted with the curse of vanishing are removed instead of dropping, which is how the vanilla rule works, so they are gone for good.

The server needs the mod, and players can join without installing it. Because the behavior depends on the game's keepInventory gamerule, a datapack is provided to make sure the gamerule stays enabled and the order of operations works as intended. The mod works with the ImmediateRespawn gamerule. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across six release versions, 1.21.11 – 26.3, and the code is released under the MIT License, which is not open source.

Key features

  1. Partial inventory keep

Hotbar, offhand and armor slots are kept on death, and the remaining inventory drops as usual.

  2. Datapack for keepInventory

A datapack confirms the keepInventory gamerule stays enabled, so the mod's order of operations works as intended.

  3. Curse of vanishing handling

Items enchanted with the curse of vanishing disappear on death rather than dropping.

  4. ImmediateRespawn support

The mod can run alongside the ImmediateRespawn gamerule without the two conflicting.

Questions

Does the server need the datapack for the mod to work?

The datapack makes sure the keepInventory gamerule stays enabled, which the mod depends on, so it should be installed on the server.

Do players need Keep Inventory Updated installed?

No. It is required on the server and optional for players.

What happens to experience on death?

Experience is handled separately from items, so it can be kept or dropped on its own terms.

Which loader should a server use?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, all for 26.3 as the latest version.
