HP: HariPlayer
by JustHari01
Servers running many players at high view distances can use HP: HariPlayer, a Forge optimization mod that reworks how player connections, chunk loading and entity tracking are handled.
What it does
HariPlayer is a server-side optimization mod for Forge 1.20.1. It changes how a server manages players, tracks entities, loads chunks and sends network packets, aiming to reduce lag in multiplayer worlds. Its core features are asynchronous chunk loading, which lets chunks load in the background during login and teleportation, spatial indexing for entity lookups in place of distance checks, and batching of block update packets. A no-tick view distance option loads chunks for visual display without ticking them, which lowers server load at large distances.
HariPlayer is a fork of VMP, the view distance engine created by ishland, and it keeps the original design while adding its own changes. Primary optimizations target dedicated servers, and client-side players gain reduced network lag. Because it runs on the server alone, players join without installing anything. Files are published for 1.20.1 only, with 2.0 as the latest Forge build from 2026-05-11, and the source code is available under the MIT License, so the mod is open source.
Key features
Async chunk loading
Chunks load in the background when a player logs in or teleports, which aims to avoid lag spikes at those moments.
Spatial entity tracking
Entity lookups use O(1) spatial indexing through AreaMap instead of brute-force distance checks.
No-tick view distance
Chunks at long distances are loaded for display only, without ticking, so the server handles fewer simulated chunks.
Packet consolidation
Block update packets are batched, and redundant packet flush calls are removed to cut network overhead.
Configurable behavior
Async loading and spatial indexing can be toggled, and multiple Netty event loops and a packet priority system can be configured.
Compatibility
Latest build for each game version and loader.
Only full game releases are shown. This mod publishes no snapshot builds.
How it compares
Ceres is a Forge mod for 1.19.2 – 1.20.1 that is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and needs both client and server. Limit Far Spawn targets 1.20.1 on Forge with client and server environment and is not open source, under All rights reserved. HP: HariPlayer is server-side only and open source under the MIT License, so clients need nothing extra.
