Greedy Meshing

by BuggiestStudios

Greedy Meshing alters chunk geometry construction by combining neighboring faces that share a block type into bigger quads while the mesh is assembled.

What it does

Vanilla Minecraft builds chunk meshes by generating each block face individually. Greedy Meshing experiments with merging neighboring faces that share a block type into bigger quads, so a flat wall made of many identical blocks can be drawn with fewer quads. Its purpose is to lower the face count on level, uniform areas, which can lift frame rates and cut the number of draw calls.

The mod is an experimental performance optimization that is marked as alpha. It includes debug tools for inspecting the meshing process. It modifies parts of the rendering pipeline, so it can conflict with other mods that touch rendering or shader code. It requires Cloth Config API, Fabric API, Mod Menu and Sodium, and it runs on the client alone. Its only published Fabric build targets 1.21.11, released as 0.0.3 on 2026-03-03, and the first release dates from 2026-03-01. The mod is All rights reserved and is not open source, though its source code is publicly available.

Key features

  1. Greedy meshing algorithm

Adjacent faces of the same block type are combined into larger quads when chunk meshes are built.

  2. Reduced face count

Flat, uniform surfaces are represented with fewer faces, which lowers the number of quads the renderer has to handle.

  3. Debug tools

Built-in debugging utilities let developers and testers inspect how faces are generated and merged.

  4. Experimental status

The optimization is still experimental, so results may vary and conflicts with rendering or shader mods are possible.

Questions

Does Greedy Meshing need Sodium?

Yes. Sodium is a required dependency, alongside Cloth Config API, Fabric API and Mod Menu.

Which loader and game version does Greedy Meshing support?

The mod is built for Fabric only, with a single game version: 1.21.11.

Does Greedy Meshing have to be installed on servers?

No. It is installed on the player's side alone, so servers need nothing.

What the author says

GreedyMeshing is a rendering optimization mod for Fabric 1.21.11 that experiments with greedy meshing techniques for chunk geometry generation. In vanilla Minecraft, block faces are typically generated individually during chunk mesh building. GreedyMeshing attempts to merge adjacent faces of the same block type into…
