From Another World
by acats
From Another World brings a shapeshifting alien species modeled on The Thing into Minecraft 1.20.1, where infected mobs spread through a world like an organism.
What it does
The mod adds an alien species that infects and transforms creatures in the world. Its mobs do not spawn or despawn at random: they can only appear through their own method of reproduction, which keeps the threat in one place and makes it spread gradually. Flint and Steel set these mobs on fire with a right click, so fire is a practical answer to the infection.
Survival is the design focus, and the mod is balanced for survival play with no other mods installed. The Alien Thing can seem impossible to kill at first, but the author states that it can be beaten by planning around how it survives. Installation needs AzureLib and FromAnotherLibrary on every loader, and Fabric API on Fabric. The mod runs on client and server and is open source under the MIT License, with builds for 1.19.3, 1.19.4 and 1.20.1.
Key features
Infection spread
Infected mobs spread through the world by a fixed reproduction method rather than random spawning.
Fire as a weapon
Flint and Steel can set this mod's mobs on fire with a single right click on them.
Fixed spawning
The mobs cannot spawn or despawn randomly, so their presence follows the world's infection.
Survival balance
Mob strength and behaviour are tuned for survival mode without other mods, according to the author.

Use cases
Survival worlds
Players who want a slow-building threat in a survival world can let the infection spread across the map over time.
Who it’s for: Players who want an invasion-style threat with a fixed spread method, and server owners who run survival worlds with the mod's dependencies installed on both sides.
How it compares
Arachnids is open source under the MIT License and covers Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for 1.19.1 – 1.21.1, with the same client and server environment. Species runs on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge for 1.19 – 1.20.1 under All rights reserved, so its source is not open. Hopper Invasion is Forge only for 1.20.1, under the MIT License, and is not open source.
