Free camera API

by AnECanSaiTin

Free camera API is a Forge and NeoForge library that lets other mods change camera state, detaching the view from the player.

ForgeNeoForgeClient required, server optionalGNU General Public License v3.0 or laterOpen source1.20.1 – 26.1.2

What it does

Other mods use the library to switch into a free camera mode and modify the camera state from code. The camera internals are decoupled, which reduces the complexity a dependent mod has to handle. A plugin class is created by the dependent mod, given a unique identifier string and a priority such as ModifierPriority.HIGH or ModifierPriority.LOWEST, and it updates the camera data frame each tick. Camera, Zoom and Camera Anim are among the mods that rely on it, and Free Camera API Tripod is listed as requiring it as well.

Chunk loading can reach beyond the player's view range when expansion is enabled, so terrain stays loaded around a moved camera. Block collision detection is off by default and can be turned on in the configuration interface. The default key mapping for the free camera mode requires manual setup. The environment is client required and server optional: players need the library, and a server that runs it force-enables the mod, while a server without it leaves the client settings in place. The code is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later and is open source, with public links for the source and the issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Free camera mode

Switches the view into a free camera that can move independently of the player and modify its state.

  2. Plugin system

Dependent mods register a plugin class with a unique identifier string and a priority setting.

  3. Chunk loading beyond view

Optional expansion loads chunks past the player's normal view range around the moved camera.

  4. Block collision detection

Collision with blocks is disabled by default and can be enabled in the configuration interface.

Use cases

Camera mods

Mods that need a detached camera, such as cinematic or zoom tools, can build on the library instead of handling the camera themselves.

Server-enforced settings

A server running the mod force-enables it for players, while servers without it leave the client's settings unchanged.

Who it’s for: Mod developers building camera tools for Forge or NeoForge, and players who install a camera mod that requires this library.

Questions

Does Free camera API need to be installed on the server?

No. Players need it in their own game, while a server can run without it.

Which loaders and versions does Free camera API support?

Files exist for Forge and NeoForge across 12 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.1.2. The latest Forge file is for 1.20.1, and the latest NeoForge file is 5.1.1-beta for 26.1.2 on the beta channel.

Why is the default key mapping not working out of the box?

The default key mapping requires manual setup, so it has to be configured before the free camera mode can be triggered by a key.

In the catalog

Free camera API is one of 3,514 Library mods on ModsFinder, and one of 1,576 Library mods for Forge. 15,189 mods support Minecraft 26.1.2.

What the author says

By default, this feature is not bound to a key mapping and requires manual setup. Block collision detection is enabled by default and can be disabled via the configuration interface. If the mod is not installed on the server, it will be force-enabled; otherwise, it will follow the server's settings. ## What are the…
