FlowChat

by bradcarnage

FlowChat matches incoming chat lines against patterns defined in a flowchat.json file and reacts with commands, toasts, sounds or rewritten text.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient or server, optionalMIT LicenseOpen source1.7.10 – 26.1.2

What it does

Rules in flowchat.json let a player match chat messages with regular expressions, or match the raw JSON chat components instead of the displayed text. A match can trigger one command or a sequence of commands, redirect the line to a toast or the action bar, play a chosen sound, or replace the text with formatted output. Color codes can be preserved during matching, so a pattern can depend on the color of a message.

The mod also rewrites outgoing messages, intercepting what the player sends and applying command aliases or color prefixes before it reaches the server. Numeric capture groups from rapid successive lines, such as a shop listing several items, can be summed into a running total. Edits to flowchat.json are applied with the flowchat reload command in game, with no restart needed. FlowChat is published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with a server version for Paper, Spigot and Bukkit, and it is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Regex chat triggers

Incoming messages are matched with regular expressions and can run one command or several in order.

  2. Replacement and rewriting

Matched text can be replaced with formatted output, and outgoing messages can be rewritten before they are sent.

  3. Toasts and sound alerts

Matched lines can be shown as toasts or in the action bar, and a chosen sound can play with them.

  4. Running totals

Numeric values across quick consecutive messages are added together, such as bulk item values in a shop.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Players who want custom chat behavior on a client, and server owners who prefer regex rules over plugin code for chat handling. Server use needs the Paper, Spigot or Bukkit build.

How it compares

Full comparison

ChatHighlighter is client-side only, open source under the MIT License and published for Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.18.2 – 26.3, so it changes chat only on the player's own screen. Console Filter Next covers 1.8.9 – 26.3 for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Legacy Fabric, is not open source and uses the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license. Either side can run Console Filter Next, and neither needs it. FlowChat works on a client alone, a server alone or both, and it is open source under the MIT License, with files for 1.7.10 – 26.1.2.
