Filled Map Coordinates
by manu__faktur
Filled Map Coordinates stores the exact position of each filled map when it is created, so the map item can show where it covers.
What it does
When a player creates a new filled map, Minecraft saves the exact coordinates of the area it covers in a custom component on the map item itself. With advanced tooltips disabled the coordinates are hidden, and with advanced tooltips enabled they appear. Maps keep their normal use in every other respect.
The mod also records the scaling level of a map, which changes when a map is zoomed in or out at a cartography table. The Minecraft wiki explains how zoom levels relate to the scale of the area a map covers, which helps interpret the recorded values. Filled Map Coordinates requires Fabric API, runs on Fabric and Quilt for 1.21 – 1.21.4, and is released under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0 license, so it is not open source. Because the environment is client and server, the server must store the data and the client must show it.
Maps that were created before the mod was installed do not gain coordinates, since their metadata was never written. Removing the mod later leaves the stored metadata in place, and it has no effect on the game. Source code and the issue tracker are public.
Key features
Coordinates in the tooltip
The corners of the area a filled map covers are shown in the item tooltip when advanced tooltips are enabled.
Coordinates saved at creation
The exact area is written to the map item when it is first created, so the values stay with that map.
Zoom level recorded
The scaling level of each map is stored and updated when the map is zoomed in or out at a cartography table.
Normal map use kept
Empty maps are still filled and used the same way, and the extra data does not change how maps behave.

How it compares
Map Collector is a client-side only Fabric mod under the MIT License, open source, and published for 1.21.5 – 1.21.8, so it does not need to be installed on the server. Show map Id is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and covers 1.20.4 – 26.3. Filled Map Coordinates needs both sides, runs on Fabric and Quilt, and is not open source.

What the author says
You can manage config in-game with the command /mapcoordinates true/false. Alternatively, you can edit it manually in config/FilledMapCoordinates/config.yml. When enabled, simply use maps like you always would.
