Fern Config

by Lemonnik

Fern Config is a library for loading, saving and editing configuration files in several formats, for mods and tools that need one.

FabricForgeNeoForgeQuiltClient or server, optionalCustom license1.18 – 26.2

What it does

The library reads and writes configuration in multiple formats, including JSON5 and TOML, so a developer can choose the save format that suits a project. It also provides helpers for values that are less common in plain config files, such as float arrays and color utilities.

Fern Config is a library, so it adds no blocks, items or gameplay of its own. Either side can run it, and neither a client nor a server needs it. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, across 29 release versions 1.18 – 26.2 under a custom license that is not open source.

Key features

  1. Multiple save formats

Configuration can be saved in JSON5 or TOML, so the file format can match what a project expects.

  2. Float arrays

Arrays of floating point values can be stored and read back, which plain key and value config files often lack.

  3. Color utilities

Helpers for handling colors are included, so mods that expose color settings do not need to write their own parsing.

  4. Supported formats list

The supported formats are listed in the project's wiki, along with the features of the latest version.

Use cases

Config for a mod under development

A mod author can declare settings once and let the library handle loading and saving in the chosen format.

Tools that edit config files

A utility that reads and rewrites TOML or JSON5 files can use the same format handling instead of a custom parser.

Who it’s for: Mod authors and tool developers who want to manage configuration in several formats. Players who only install finished mods have no direct use for the library.
