FediCraft

by SoniEx2

FediCraft lets Minecraft clicks on ActivityPub handles and federated links open in a fediverse app or browser on the player's own machine.

FabricQuiltClient-side onlyMIT OR Apache-2.01.19.2 – 1.20.4

What it does

On the client, FediCraft turns federated links in chat and in-game text into clickable links. When a player clicks an ActivityPub link, such as a Mastodon profile or post, the mod tries to open it in a standalone app installed on the computer. If no app is found, the link opens in a read-only view in the browser instead. Server-side attempts to resolve ActivityPub handles are also made so the right ActivityPub link can be offered.

The mod is built around Fallback Protocol Handlers from the Fedi Links Project, which lets instances offer a fallback so players without an app still see the content. Instance admins are encouraged to implement this, and Mastodon instances can do so with a patch, while Akkoma instances use a pull request. A list of ActivityPub instances that implement the fallback handler is kept, along with third-party Mastodon-compatible clients known to work with FediCraft. Windows builds ship a DLL for x86 and x86_64, and Windows arm64 players must compile the DLL themselves.

FediCraft requires Fabric API and runs on Fabric or Quilt for 1.19.2 – 1.20.4, with the latest file 0.2.7+1.20 for 1.20.4 released on 2023-10-28. Servers do not need it; each player installs it for their own game. The code is licensed under MIT OR Apache-2.0 and is not open source; public links exist for the source code and issue tracker.

Key features

  1. Clickable federated links

Federated links in chat and text become clickable, extending the vanilla support for HTTP and HTTPS links.

  2. Standalone app opening

ActivityPub links open preferentially in a standalone client such as Tokodon, Tuba or Feditext, so the player can interact directly.

  3. Read-only browser fallback

When no app is installed, the link opens a read-only view in the browser.

  4. Server-side handle resolution

Server-side attempts resolve ActivityPub handles to the appropriate ActivityPub links.

What happens if a player has no fediverse app installed?

The link opens in the browser as a read-only view, which works without any app.

Are Windows arm64 builds included?

No. The mod ships a DLL for x86 and x86_64 on Windows, and arm64 players have to compile the DLL themselves.

What the author says

This mod enables better integration between Minecraft and federated networks (of note, ActivityPub), especially with standalone apps for federated networks. On the client side, it allows clicking links to federated networks in general - as sent by the server - and opening them as per the Fedi Links Project (or see…
