Fairer Death

by mistersecret312

Fairer Death replaces the all-or-nothing vanilla keepInventory rule with configurable options for which items a player keeps after dying.

ForgeNeoForgeServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.20.1 – 1.21.1

What it does

Keeping items on death can be set by age, by chance, by slot category or by item tag. The FULL option keeps the whole inventory and experience, while AGE keeps only items held for a set number of ticks, and CHANCE rolls each item for a set probability of being kept. CATEGORIES limits the kept items to chosen slot groups such as the hotbar or armor, and TAG keeps only item IDs listed under the fairer death:keep item tag.

The mod is intended for players who find vanilla keepInventory too blunt, for modpack developers who want a middle ground between losing everything and keeping everything, and for server owners who set the rules for a multiplayer world. Because it is server-side only, players join without installing it, and the server alone decides which options apply. The code is open source under the MIT License.

Installation needs only the loader itself. Builds are published for Forge and NeoForge, with a version 1.0.0 file for 1.20.1 and one for 1.21.1, both dated 2026-08-09.

Key features

  1. Full inventory keeping

The FULL option keeps the entire inventory and experience when a player dies, matching vanilla keepInventory.

  2. Age-based keeping

Only items that have been held for a configured number of ticks survive death.

  3. Chance-based keeping

Each item rolls a set probability of being kept, so some items may be lost at random.

  4. Category and tag selection

Keep the hotbar, armor or inventory slots by category, or keep only items listed in a configurable tag.

Echo of Death requires both client and server, is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 and targets NeoForge 1.21.1 alone. Death Logger can run on either side or both and is open source under the MIT License for 1.21.3 – 26.2.

Questions

Does Fairer Death have to be installed on the client?

No. The mod is server-side only, so only the server needs it and players can join without installing anything.

Which loaders does Fairer Death support?

Forge and NeoForge. Files exist for 1.20.1 on Forge and for 1.21.1 on NeoForge, both version 1.0.0.

Can the kept items be limited to one category?

Yes. The CATEGORIES option keeps only items in the slot groups the server selects, and the TAG option works on a configurable item tag instead.
