ExtraSounds

by Khaimolop

ExtraSounds lets players and modders register custom sound categories, each with its own volume slider in the in-game sound settings.

FabricClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.4 – 1.21.1

What it does

Custom sound categories can be created for interface sounds, play sounds and other groups, and each category is configurable so sounds can be organized quickly. Players adjust the volume of each category independently through the sound settings screen, and vanilla Minecraft sounds can be played into the same categories. Sounds added by other mods and resource packs can also be routed into them.

Once a category is registered, the playsound command reflects it, so commands can target custom categories the same way they target vanilla ones. The mod runs on Fabric only, with builds for 1.20.4 and 1.21.1 and the 1.21.1-Client+Server file as the latest release, published on 2026-07-07. It is needed on the client and on the server, so both sides must run it, and the mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Custom sound categories

Categories for interface sounds, play sounds and other groups can be created and configured to keep sounds tidy.

  2. Independent volume sliders

Each category gets its own volume control in the in-game sound settings, separate from the master volume.

  3. Vanilla and modded sounds

Vanilla sounds, sounds from other mods and sounds from resource packs can all be played through the categories.

  4. Playsound command support

Registered categories are reflected by the playsound command, so commands can address them directly.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Modpack authors, mod developers who add sounds, and players who want separate volume controls for different groups of sounds. Players and server owners install it on both sides.

How it compares

Full comparison

Configurable Mute On Focus Lost is client-side only, open source under the MIT License, and published for 1.21.4 – 1.21.11, so it targets a different version range and does not add categories. Audio Hotkeys is also client-side only and open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, with builds for 1.19 – 26.3, and it binds keys to audio actions rather than creating categories. ExtraSounds runs on both client and server for 1.20.4 and 1.21.1 and is not open source.
