Extra Fuel

by QuickStopFire

Extra Fuel lets furnaces burn items that vanilla does not accept as fuel, such as books, maps, dried kelp and wooden blocks, through a data pack.

FabricForgeQuiltServer required, client optionalApache License 2.0Open source1.19.4 – 1.20.4

What it does

The mod works by replacing six files in the data/minecraft/tags/items directory. Those tag files decide which items a furnace treats as fuel, so adding new entries makes sticks, dried kelp, wooden doors, wooden buttons, wool carpets and similar items usable where torches, hay bales and paper were the only options before.

The author text includes a table that gives each new fuel's duration and how many items it smelts. Extra Fuel is a data pack, so it is not a loader mod on its own, and it is also published for Fabric, Forge and Quilt across 6 release versions, 1.19.4 – 1.20.4. Because it runs on the server, the server and its players can use the new fuels, while clients need nothing extra. Fabric API is optional on Fabric builds.

The project is open source under the Apache License 2.0, and its source code and issue tracker are public. Bugs can be reported through the Issues section on GitHub.

Key features

  1. Extra fuel items

Books, maps and other items that vanilla rejects become valid furnace fuel.

  2. Blocks as fuel

Wooden doors, wooden buttons and wool carpets can be burned, which vanilla does not allow.

  3. Plant fuels

Sticks and dried kelp join the fuel list, so they can be used in place of coal or charcoal.

  4. Burn time table

The author text lists each added fuel with its duration and the count of items it smelts.

Use cases

Survival early game

Players short on coal can burn sticks, dried kelp or wooden blocks while smelting ore.

Server economies

Server owners who want a change to fuel use can install the mod on the server instead of editing vanilla files.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who want furnaces to accept more everyday items as fuel. Clients do not need the mod, so it suits servers that want the change without asking players to install anything.

How it compares

Full comparison

More Fuel is a Fabric-only client and server mod for 1.19.2 – 1.20.1, released under the MIT License. Data-DL is a client-side only Fabric and Quilt mod for 1.19 – 1.20.1, also under the MIT License, so it does not change server behavior. Extra Fuel differs from both by being a server required data pack that covers 1.19.4 – 1.20.4 on Fabric, Forge and Quilt.

What the author says

This mod/datapack allows you to use as fuel those items and blocks that for some reason cannot be used in vanilla. If sticks and dried kelp can be used as fuel, then why not use a torch, a hay bale and paper? The table below shows all the new fuels, their burning time (in seconds) and the number of items they can…
