Dynamic Height

by Multiverse

With Dynamic Height installed, a world can be generated with a height and depth other than the vanilla limits, up to 32,000 blocks.

What it does

Dynamic Height changes the maximum and minimum build height of a world. Players set the range when a world is created in singleplayer, and server owners can upload a generated world and start it on a server. Overworld, Nether and End can each be adjusted, and the mod is aimed at building massive skyscrapers, floating islands, or deep underground complexes without the usual limits.

Installation needs the mod on both the server and every player, since the environment is client and server. Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 30 release versions, 1.17 – 26.1.1, and the code is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 only, so it is open source. Random Layer Chunk requires this mod, and the author notes that the feature is experimental and works most reliably on NeoForge 1.21.1 and Fabric 1.20 – 1.21.4.

Key features

  1. Adjustable world height

Both the maximum and minimum build height can be set, so a world can extend far above or below vanilla limits.

  2. Generation at chosen heights

A world is generated with the desired height settings, and the values can be reset to vanilla heights by editing the world's NBT data.

  3. Dimension data files

Generated worlds keep their height data in the dimension folders inside the world directory, and the matching .dat file can be copied between them.

  4. Save and load cost

Very tall or deep worlds take longer to load and save, and they use more memory than a standard world.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Builders and survival players who want more vertical space than vanilla allows. Server owners running large custom worlds also need it, since clients and the server must agree on the height settings.

Questions

Does Dynamic Height need to be installed on the server?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Which loader should Dynamic Height be used with?

Files are published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt. The most complete feature set is noted for NeoForge 1.21.1 and Fabric 1.20 – 1.21.4.

Can a world's height be changed after it was generated?

Changing a live server's height without generating the world again can cause errors and corruption. Reset the values with an NBT editor and generate a new world instead.
