DarkMobs
With DarkMobs installed on a server, hostile mobs in the Overworld are tuned to hit harder and take more effort to defeat.
What it does
DarkMobs changes the stats and behaviour of vanilla mobs so fights demand more attention. The author describes the aim as making encounters closer to boss battles in games like Dark Souls, where a player plans each fight instead of relying on gear alone. Mob tuning is adjusted over time based on player feedback, so the balance is expected to shift between releases.
Only the server needs DarkMobs; players join without installing it. Fabric API is required on every loader it ships for, and Pehkui is optional, used to make the Ender Dragon fight harder while the other mobs stay as they are. The mod is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 8 release versions, 1.20.1 – 26.2, and is not open source.
The same authors made DarkRPG, a full RPG content pack, and DarkMobs fits alongside it in a modpack, with quests and RPG gameplay as the broader setting. Its files were first published on 2024-03-26, and the latest builds for 26.2 were released on 2026-05-01.
Key features
Harder vanilla mobs
Vanilla mobs receive stronger stats so they are harder to defeat, especially with players using basic weapons and equipment.
Dark Souls style fights
Mob encounters are built to reward planning and careful play rather than quick melee exchanges.
Adjustable Ender Dragon fight
Pehkui can be paired with the mod to make the Ender Dragon fight harder while other mobs keep their normal behaviour.
Feedback-driven tuning
Mob values are adjusted between updates based on ongoing player feedback.

Use cases
Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack builders who want tougher vanilla mobs and slower, more deliberate combat. Single-player players can also run it through a local server if they want the same balance.
