Darkest Before Dawn

by TheDaeruin

Darkest Before Dawn makes nights darker and fire harder to come by, so torches burn out and light has to be planned for.

What it does

The mod changes how light and fire work in a world. Darkness depends on sunlight, moonlight, weather and distance underground, so caves cannot be explored safely without a light source. Torches burn out after a while and cannot be carried in the inventory; they have to be placed on soft blocks such as dirt. Fire-making is realistic, and burning netherrack is one of the ways to start it.

Progress is slow by design. Furnaces are made from clay bricks and must be hardened in a campfire, and the first furnace can take a long time to reach, so players rely on campfires until then. The author expects players to move toward more permanent light such as glowstone and redstone lamps over time. Darkest Before Dawn offers many config settings, which let server owners tune the difficulty.

Darkest Before Dawn requires Primal Lib. It is client and server, so the server and every player need the mod. Files exist for Forge only, on 1.12.2, and the latest file is 1.12.2-0.0.76 from 2025-11-05 on the beta channel. The mod is open source under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.

Key features

  1. Darker nights

Night brings darkness that depends on the sun, moon, weather and depth underground.

  2. Torches that burn out

Torches run down over time, so players must keep watch and renew light around their base.

  3. Slow furnace progression

Clay bricks must be hardened in a campfire before a furnace can be built, which delays the first furnace.

  4. Configurable settings

Config options adjust how dark the world gets and how the fire and torch rules behave.

What the author says

A mod that adds realistic fire-making and torches. Just remember, the night is always darkest before the dawn. Darkest Before Dawn adds more realism and difficulty around making fire, light, and torches. It will take a significant amount of time before you finally get a furnace, so you'll need to rely on campfires…
