Custom Player Heads

by onebeastchris

Custom Player Heads drops a player's head with their current skin when that player dies, and adds a command to obtain one.

FabricServer-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.19.2 – 1.21

What it does

When a player is killed, the server drops that player's head carrying the skin the player was using at death. The head keeps displaying the skin even if the player later changes it, which separates this from a datapack that only drops a plain head. Players can also obtain heads through an optional command, and the option that controls who may use it is set by a permission level.

Bedrock players who join through Geyser are supported, and a Geyser and Floodgate server handles their heads automatically. Floodgate prefixes can be turned off so head names stay clean, which matters when other mods already change how names display. The mod works alongside FabricTailor, and a non-player death can also drop a head when enabled.

The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing it. It is published for Fabric alone, requires Fabric API, and is released under the MIT License as open source. Files cover 1.19.2 – 1.21 across 11 release versions, with 2.1.0 for 1.21 as the latest, dated 2024-06-14.

Key features

  1. Skin-preserving player heads

Dropped heads carry the skin the player used at death and keep showing it afterward.

  2. Lore on dropped heads

An optional lore line on each head names the player it came from, and it can be switched off.

  3. Head command

An optional command gives players a head, and a configurable permission level decides who may run it.

  4. Bedrock head support

Bedrock players joining through Geyser get heads too, with Floodgate prefixes available to hide.

Who it’s for: Server owners running survival, minigame or PvP servers, and players who want heads that keep a player's skin.

How it compares

Full comparison

Player Drops Head is server-required with the client optional, open source under the MIT License, and published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across 1.16 – 26.3. Players Drop Heads also covers several loaders, for 1.19 – 26.3, but it is server required with the client optional under a custom license and is not open source. Skin Textures is a client-side only Fabric mod for 1.19.4 – 1.20.2 under the MIT License, so it changes nothing on the server.

What the author says

Small Fabric mod to drop player heads upon player death - or get them via a command - that's compatible with Bedrock players joined through Geyser, or other mods changing the skin while in-game; e.g. FabricTailor. Unlike a datapack, this will drop a head that will keep the skin you are currently playing with!…
