Customizable Carts

by UltrusBot

Customizable Carts adds new minecart designs assembled from interchangeable body parts, and its datapack format lets others add their own.

What it does

The mod introduces ten new cart bodies, including several Carnival Cart colors (Blue, Mint, Orange, Pink and Yellow), the Trial Cart, Music Cart, Golden Cart and Tuff Cart. Each body can be combined with the others to build a cart that differs from the vanilla minecart. The author notes that more bodies are planned for future updates.

Carts are defined through JSON files, so a datapack can add its own minecart designs without changing the mod's code. Some of the bodies are not obtainable in survival, which means they are meant for creative play or for servers that hand them out through commands. The mod was made during Modfest, and the Carnival carts were originally developed for Fabric only before the first full release came out for both NeoForge and Fabric.

Customizable Carts requires Fabric API. It is published for Fabric and Quilt for Minecraft 1.21, and it runs on client and server, so the server and every player need it. The code is open source under the MIT License, and public links to the source code and issue tracker are available.

Key features

  1. Ten new cart bodies

Ten added bodies, from Carnival colors to the Trial Cart, Music Cart, Golden Cart and Tuff Cart, change how a cart looks.

  2. Modular cart design

Carts are built from separate parts, so a body can be swapped to produce a different minecart.

  3. Datapack-based cart definitions

JSON files let datapacks register extra minecart designs without modifying the mod itself.

  4. Some bodies outside survival

A number of bodies cannot be obtained in survival, so they are reached through creative mode or server commands.

Use cases

Who it’s for: The mod suits builders who want distinct minecarts for rail systems and themed areas, and server owners who want to offer cart designs beyond vanilla. Players who only want standard minecart behavior do not need it.

Yes. Fabric API is listed as a required dependency, and it must be installed alongside the mod on Fabric or Quilt.

Does the server need the mod?

Yes. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too.

Can all the cart bodies be obtained in survival?

Not all of them. Some bodies cannot be obtained in survival and are available through other means.

Can datapacks add new carts?

Yes. Carts are defined in JSON files, so a datapack can add minecart designs without changing the mod.
