Custom Displayname

by haedal

Custom Displayname lets a player give other players a local nickname that only their own client shows, decorated with formatting tags.

FabricNeoForgeClient-side onlyMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.8 – 26.2

What it does

The mod changes how names appear on the player's own screen. A player can rename any other player locally, and the new name is displayed only on that client; the server and other players see nothing different. Names can be decorated with tags, and a hex color code can be applied to a name.

Only the client needs the mod, so players join a server without installing anything. Builds are published for Fabric and NeoForge, and the 1.21.8 – 26.2 range covers seven release versions, 1.21.8 – 26.2, with 0.5 for 26.2 as the latest file on both loaders. The code is open source under the MIT License.

Key features

  1. Local renaming

Other players can be renamed for the local client only, so the change never reaches the server or other players.

  2. Hex color names

A hex color code can be used to color a displayed name.

  3. Decorative tags

Names can be decorated with formatting tags, and the tags supported by the mod are listed in its documentation.

  4. Simple setup

Renaming works without commands or server configuration, so a single player sets up their own display names.

Use cases

Personal friend nicknames

A player who knows several people by a shorter or private name can label them on their own screen.

Roleplay and community servers

Players on a roleplay server can display character names that differ from their account names.

Who it’s for: Players who want to change how other people's names look on their own screen, without touching the server or other players' views.
