Crazy Painting

by omoflop

Crazy Painting lets players make and display their own art in-game through custom paintings, palettes and canvases.

FabricClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.21.7 – 26.1.2

What it does

The mod adds a dynamic, immersive painting system. A palette can be crafted from a single wooden slab, and dyes add extra colors to it. Larger canvases are made by combining several smaller canvases in a crafting table recipe. A help button sits in the top left of the editor screen, and its overlay explains each control; a companion book goes further into the features. Finished paintings can be displayed on easels, walls, floors, ceilings and even shields.

The mod is client and server, so both the server and every player need it. Only the client needs the mod to show the editor, but the server must run it for paintings to be saved and shared. It is published for Fabric only, for four game versions: 1.21.7, 1.21.8, 1.21.11 and 26.1.2, with 1.3.7.3 for 26.1.2 as the latest file. The code is open source under the MIT License, and the source and issue tracker are public.

Key features

  1. Palette crafting

A palette is crafted from one wooden slab, and dyes add more colors to the palette for painting.

  2. Larger canvases

Several smaller canvases can be combined in a crafting table recipe to form one large canvas.

  3. Painting copies

Combining a completed painting with a blank canvas of identical size yields a duplicate, and duplicates degrade like vanilla written books, eventually reaching a state where they cannot be copied again.

  4. Data-driven brushes

Each brush is described as data and saved as a .qoi image in assets/crazypainting/brushes, grouped into folders named after its category and brush.
