Crampedness

by R1eq

Crampedness smooths how held items and the player's arm move when the camera is close to a block, mob or tree, so the first-person view eases instead of snapping.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient-side onlyAll rights reserved1.7.10 – 26.2

What it does

Items in first-person view retract and ease out of the way when the player stands near a block entity, a mob or another player. Transitions between poses are smoothed, and held items gently pull back toward their resting position, settle in place and move away again as the surroundings change. Walking up to a wall or squeezing past a tree or a close mob produces a retracted pose instead of a clipped one.

Hands are handled separately, so each arm reacts to its own surroundings and left-handed players get their own reactions. Empty hands and maps keep the normal animations, and actions adapt to what is held: mining is paused with a lighter swinging effect while a tool is in use. Reach hitboxes and gameplay stay unchanged, and the effect can be adjusted by strength from 0 to 2 or turned off entirely.

Crampedness runs on the client only. Files are published for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with builds 1.7.10 – 26.2 across 13 release versions. The latest files are 26.2-fabric-1.1.2, 26.2-forge-1.1.2 and 26.2-neoforge-1.1.2, each dated 2026-09-29. The mod is released under All rights reserved and is not open source.

Key features

  1. Retracting first-person items

Held items ease back and out of the way near block entities instead of clipping into them.

  2. Smooth pose transitions

Changes between poses are interpolated, so the arm moves in a continuous motion rather than jumping.

  3. Separate hand reactions

Each hand reacts to its own surroundings, and left-handed support is included from 1.12.2 onward.

  4. Adjustable strength

The effect can be set from 0 to 2, or disabled, without changing gameplay hitboxes or reach.

How it compares

Full comparison

HandPosition is a Forge mod for 1.20.1 only, client-side only and released under the MIT License, so it is a separate option for that version alone. Smooth Hover is client-side only, covers Fabric and NeoForge for 1.21 – 26.3, and uses All rights reserved. ToolPose targets Fabric for 26.2 under Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike 4.0. Crampedness covers all three loaders across 1.7.10 – 26.2, though none of these alternatives are open source.
