Cool Rain

by Jaiz

Cool Rain plays ambient rain and wind sounds that change with the blocks around the player, a Fabric client mod for 26.3.

FabricClient required, server optionalAll rights reserved1.16.5 – 26.3

What it does

Cool Rain creates ambient sounds for certain blocks while it rains. Each block type has its own sound: glass, water, lava and magma, foliage, metal and wool. The sounds change in volume with the distance between the player and those blocks, and the sound that plays depends on which blocks surround the player.

The mod also adds stormy wind sounds and, as of 1.4.0, ambient thunder. With the Midnight Lib dependency, any block can be added to or removed from each sound group, and each sound's volume can be set in the in-game configuration screen. Only the client needs the mod, so a server can run without it while players still hear the effects.

Cool Rain is a Fabric mod released under All rights reserved, so the code is not open source. Its source code is public, and files are published for 21 release versions, 1.16.5 – 26.3, with 1.4.0-26.3 as the latest Fabric file for 26.3, dated 2026-09-17.

Key features

  1. Rain on glass

Rain falling on glass blocks plays its own ambient sound, distinct from open ground.

  2. Rain on water and lava

Water, lava and magma each produce a separate rain sound, so a lake and a lava pool sound different in the same storm.

  3. Rain on foliage and wool

Leaves, plants and wool blocks each have a rain sound, which changes as the player moves closer or further away.

  4. Rain on metal blocks

Metal blocks play a rain sound of their own, and the volume follows the distance to the blocks.

Use cases

Rainy builds with glass roofs

Players who build greenhouses or glass domes hear the rain change as the roof material changes.

Storm atmosphere

With the wind and thunder sounds enabled, a storm in a survival world gains extra ambient layers.

Who it’s for: Players who want more detailed weather audio in rain, and anyone who builds with glass, water, metal or foliage in rainy biomes. Only the client needs the mod, so it suits single-player and multiplayer clients alike.
