ChatFlex

by MrLeonardos

ChatFlex lets server owners set up several chat channels, each with its own name, message format, range and permissions, on NeoForge servers.

NeoForgeServer-side onlyAll rights reserved1.21 – 1.21.4

What it does

Each channel is defined with a unique identifier, a display name, a customizable message format, and a prefix character that players type to send into it. A channel can be limited by distance in blocks, or set to global so every player on the server receives its messages. Cooldowns in seconds control how often a player may post in a channel, and a channel can be made the default for new messages.

Access is controlled per channel through read and write permission levels. When LuckPerms is installed, those checks use its permission nodes and OP-level settings; without LuckPerms, the mod still runs and falls back to its own permission handling. The configuration covers the global and local channels as well as any custom channels a server owner adds, so a server can split public talk, local talk and staff talk.

The mod is server-side only, so players join without installing anything. It targets NeoForge for 1.21 – 1.21.4, with the latest file 1.0.0 for 1.21.4, released 2024-12-21. It is not open source and is released under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Custom chat channels

Server owners define several channels, each with its own identifier, display name and message format.

  2. Distance-limited channels

A channel can be restricted to a radius in blocks, so nearby players hear each other while global channels reach everyone.

  3. Per-channel permissions

Read and write permissions are set separately for each channel, and LuckPerms OP-level checks can be used when it is installed.

  4. Message cooldowns

A channel can require players to wait a set number of seconds between messages, which slows spam in busy channels.

Use cases

Who it’s for: Server owners who run multiplayer worlds and want to separate conversations into channels with their own rules. Players only need to type the channel prefix, and the mod asks nothing of their client.

Questions

Does ChatFlex need LuckPerms?

No. LuckPerms is optional. When it is installed, channel access can use its OP-level checks; without it, the mod runs on its own permission settings.

Does ChatFlex have to be installed on the client?

No. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.
