Big Signs

by BlackCat64

Big Signs adds signs with much larger text than vanilla signs, in one-line and thin variants for Forge and NeoForge.

ForgeNeoForgeClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.20.6

What it does

Big Signs introduces new sign types whose text is noticeably enlarged compared with the vanilla originals. The regular sign keeps the vanilla model and shows a single line with room for only a few characters, so large letters and numbers fit on one block. Two additional varieties, one-line signs and one-line hanging signs, come in the vanilla wood types and in 20 colours of metal.

Thin signs have a physically thinner body and can be positioned at either end, middle or base of a block, and a sign pointed at either end works as an arrow. The mod suggests uses in train-related builds with the Create mod, in displays that need large numbers, and in places that would otherwise spell out block-letter characters line by line. Wooden one-line signs are crafted with 1-to-1 recipes from vanilla signs, while white metal variants use a 3x3 crafting grid with iron.

Big Signs is published for Forge and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.20.1 – 1.20.6, and the environment is client and server, so the server and every player need the mod. The code is available as source, but the mod is not open source and is released under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Bigger sign text

Signs display much larger text than vanilla signs while the model stays the same as the original sign.

  2. One-line signs

One-line signs fit one large letter or number per block and display numbers more clearly than stacked vanilla text.

  3. Thin and arrow placement

Thin signs can sit at the top, middle or bottom of a block, and a sign pointed at either end works as an arrow.

  4. Wood and metal variants

New signs come in vanilla wood types and in metal, with metal one-line signs dyed into 20 colours.

How it compares

Full comparison

Sign Icons is a client-side only mod, published for Fabric and Forge across 1.20 – 1.21.11 under the MIT License, so it does not change signs on the server. Big Sign Writer is also client-side only and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, with files for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge across 1.20 – 26.3. Big Signs differs in being client and server, with new sign blocks rather than icons or writing tools, and in covering only 1.20.1 – 1.20.6.

What the author says

These new signs come in every vanilla wood type, as well as 20 colours of metal. They display much larger text than vanilla signs. The sign's model stays the same, so there is only One Line of text, with room for only a few characters. One-Line Signs are perfect for displaying large numbers in your world. Say goodbye…
