Better Villagers

by aat0m

Tired villagers that stare at walls or wander toward lava have their path choices steered by Better Villagers, a Fabric mod that sets per-block path penalties.

FabricClient and serverAll rights reserved1.20.1 – 1.21.11

What it does

Better Villagers changes how villagers choose where to walk. Assigning a path penalty to a block shapes how villagers route around it: raising the number makes them steer clear of it, lowering the number draws them toward it, and setting it to 0 makes the block their first choice. Villagers try to route through lower-penalty blocks whenever a route exists, which steers their movement toward walkways and away from hazards such as lava, magma blocks and water.

The penalties are edited in-game through Mod Menu and the configuration screen provided by Cloth Config API, using a block-by-block list. The mod works in singleplayer and multiplayer, and it is published for Fabric across three release versions, 1.20.1 – 1.21.11. Fabric API and Cloth Config API are required, and Mod Menu is required for the in-game screen. The environment is client and server, so the server and every player need the mod, and the code is not open source; it is released under All rights reserved.

Key features

  1. Custom path penalties

Any block can be assigned a penalty value, which changes how strongly villagers avoid stepping onto it.

  2. Preferred blocks

A penalty of 0 marks a block that villagers prefer over blocks with higher penalties.

  3. In-game configuration

Penalties are set from the Mod Menu screen, so no file editing is needed for routine changes.

  4. Hazard avoidance

Dangerous or annoying terrain such as lava, magma blocks and water can be given high penalties to keep villagers off it.

Use cases

Safer village walkways

Low penalties on paths and roads encourage villagers to use them instead of crossing grass or sand.

Keeping villagers away from hazards

High penalties on lava, magma and water reduce the chance that villagers wander into them.

Who it’s for: Players who run Fabric villages and want villagers to move along chosen routes, and server owners who set penalty values for a shared world.
