Better Looting

by MoHuia

With Better Looting installed, dropped items no longer flood the inventory when a player walks over them, and a floating list lets the player pick only what they want.

What it does

Better Looting replaces the vanilla way dropped items are collected. Walking near loot opens a floating window that lists the items on the ground, and a player browses it with the mouse wheel and takes items one at a time or all at once with the F key. The window can be moved, resized and made more or less transparent. Stacks display visually, and a single pickup can take up to 64 items from a stack.

The mod sorts the list so rarer items appear at the top, and a filter mode hides common junk such as cobblestone and dirt by default. Players toggle the filter with the Left Alt key and open a filter panel to build their own whitelist and blacklist. The mod is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and its source code and issue tracker are public. It targets 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, with files for both versions. Client and server both need it.

Key features

  1. Floating item window

Dropped items appear in a floating list when the player approaches, instead of filling the inventory.

  2. Pickup by selection

Browse the list with the mouse wheel and press F to take the highlighted item, or hold F to grab nearby items.

  3. Rarity sorting

Rarer items such as tools and armor are placed near the top of the list so valuable loot stands out.

  4. Filter and custom lists

A default filter hides common blocks, and a whitelist and blacklist let players decide which items stay visible.

  5. Adjustable window

The floating window's placement, dimensions and opacity can be adjusted so it does not cover the part of the screen a player needs.
