Better Caves Archaic

by Tesseract

Better Caves Archaic is a Forge world generation mod for Minecraft 1.7.10 that replaces the vanilla cave layout with more varied underground spaces.

ForgeClient and serverGNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 onlyOpen source1.7.10

What it does

Caves generated by the mod include lakes, rivers, lava seas and open oceans underground, not only the tunnel-shaped passages vanilla produces. Some caves are flooded with water, others filled with lava, and large spherical caverns sit among the tunnels, which makes underground exploration less repetitive. The generation settings can be adjusted in the configuration file.

Mycelium is required and must be installed alongside Better Caves Archaic. Servers that run it need every player to install it too. The project is released as open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and its Forge build for 1.7.10 is an unofficial adaptation of YUNG's Better Caves, which targets 1.12.2 and newer.

Key features

  1. Varied cave types

Caves include underground lakes, rivers, lava seas and oceans alongside the standard tunnel-shaped passages.

  2. Spherical caverns

Large round caverns are generated among the tunnels, adding open rooms to underground routes.

  3. Flooded and lava-filled areas

Some caves are flooded with water and others with lava, changing how players move through them.

  4. Configurable generation

Cave generation options can be changed in the configuration file, so server owners can tune the results.

Use cases

Underground exploration

Players who explore caves for ore or structures find more varied layouts than vanilla generation provides.

Who it’s for: The mod suits 1.7.10 Forge players and server owners who want more varied caves while keeping the vanilla world. Because it is a port, players who want the upstream version for newer releases should look at YUNG's Better Caves instead.

How it compares

Full comparison

YUNG's Better Caves is server-side only, is open source under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only, and has Fabric, Forge and NeoForge files for 1.20.1 – 26.1.2, so it targets newer versions than Better Caves Archaic. Immersive Cavegen is also Forge-only for 1.7.10, but it uses a custom license and is not open source, and it runs on client and server like Better Caves Archaic.
