Allay Upgrades
by EMD123
Allay Upgrades changes how allays behave in the world, keeping them near note blocks and their owners and making untamed allays easier to collect.
What it does
Allays no longer forget a note block while they are far away. They only drop the note block after getting close enough to hear that it has gone silent. An amethyst block set beneath a note block keeps allays attached to it, and punching an allay makes it forget that block. An allay that wanders too far from its owner and stops following will teleport back to them, in the way a wolf does.
Untamed allays stay near the ground instead of climbing into the sky to collect an item. Pushing an untamed allay above an amethyst block stores it on that spot, where it shows amethyst particles until an item is given. Allays carrying items dismount other entities, so they do not get stuck in boats or minecarts. Allays can also be stored in books for transport or to reduce lag: dropping a book on an allay stores it, and dropping an allay book on the ground releases it.
The mod is a data pack that the server requires, while the client may leave it out. It is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, with files covering 1.19.4 – 1.21.5. The latest file is 2.5.0+mod for 1.21.5, released 2025-05-17. The code is open source under the Apache License 2.0.
Key features
Note block memory
Allays keep track of a note block until they are near enough to notice that it has stopped playing.
Amethyst anchors
An amethyst block under a note block stops allays from forgetting it, and a punch removes the link.
Owner recall
An allay that drifts too far from its owner and stops following teleports back to them.
Ground storage
Untamed allays can be stored above an amethyst block until they receive an item.
Book storage
Allays can be stored inside books and released again by dropping the book on the ground.
