Abstract Operations
Abstract Operations is a library for converting data between JSON and NBT formats, and it is required by the Chitinous Ties mod.
What it does
The library provides a set of generic classes (GenericX, NbtX, GenericCompound and GenericList) that hold data in a shape independent of the source format. A GenericOps instance acts as a DynamicOps implementation, so conversion between JSON and NBT can be done with a single call. Conversion is lossless in both directions, and the library includes functions for mapping JSON trees onto NBT structures.
Two patches adjust how values are read. With the JSON patch enabled, number sizes can be written inside the JSON, such as 10b for a byte, and the same notation works in SNBT. Number tags and lists in SNBT are translated automatically, number arrays are handled, and the NBT patch maps bytes 0 and 1 to booleans. The library also provides explicit support for the Endec library by wispforest.
Abstract Operations requires Sinytra Connector and is published for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt across three release versions, 1.20.1 – 1.21.1. A server running it needs every connecting player to have it too. The custom license does not make it open source, and the source code and issue tracker are public.
Key features
Generic NBT and compound types
GenericX, NbtX, GenericCompound and GenericList classes hold data independently of its source format.
Lossless JSON and NBT conversion
Data moves between JSON and NBT in both directions without losing values or structure.
Typed numbers in JSON
With the JSON patch on, number sizes can be written inside the JSON, such as 10b, and SNBT numbers are translated automatically.
Boolean and array handling
The NBT patch maps bytes 0 and 1 to booleans, and number arrays are converted during translation.

Who it’s for: Mod developers who need to convert between JSON and NBT, and players who use mods that depend on this library, such as Chitinous Ties.
How it compares
NBT to Data API is a client and server mod for Fabric, Forge and NeoForge, released for 1.20 – 1.21.1 under a custom license that is not open source. NBTUltimate is a mod for Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt, released for 1.21.2 – 1.21.4 under the MIT License, which is open source, and it works on the server alone, while the client may leave it out. Abstract Operations covers 1.20.1 – 1.21.1 and is not open source.
