Material Rule Compiler

by Reverie Projects

Material Rule Compiler is a server-side worldgen optimization mod that compiles vanilla surface material rules into bytecode to shorten surface builder times.

What it does

Vanilla material rules are evaluated at runtime while chunks generate. The mod compiles them into class files using the ASM library, with static functions and an optimized layout, so the same rule set runs with fewer allocations. Random splitters and biome predictions used by material rules also allocate less, and the author reports a 30 to 40 percent decrease in surface builder execution times. The mod is experimental and changes how world generation runs, with the author noting that vanilla non-determinism is kept in mind.

Vanilla parity is maintained, including with datapacks. Where the mod encounters modded content it does not understand, it falls back to normal execution. Compatibility with other worldgen mods is tested against Terratonic and similar projects, though incompatibilities remain possible. Installation requires ZConfig, and Fast Noise is an optional addition. Moonrise is listed as incompatible. The mod runs on the server only, and the Fabric and Quilt builds cover 26.1 – 26.3 with 5 release versions and snapshot builds.

Key features

  1. Compiled material rules

Surface material rules are turned into bytecode classes with static functions, so they run without the interpreted path.

  2. Fewer allocations

Random splitters and biome predictions used by material rules allocate less memory during chunk generation.

  3. Datapack parity

Vanilla behavior is kept, including with datapacks, and unknown modded rules fall back to normal execution.

  4. Surface builder speed

The author reports a 30 to 40 percent decrease in surface builder execution times in testing.

Use cases

Server worldgen

Server owners running terrain-heavy worlds can apply the mod to shorten chunk generation during exploration.

Who it’s for: Server owners and modpack builders who run Fabric or Quilt on 26.x and want faster surface generation. Players only join a server that runs it and do not need the mod themselves.

Questions

Does Material Rule Compiler need to be installed on clients?

No. It runs on the server alone, so players need nothing extra to join.

Which loaders and versions are supported?

Builds exist for Fabric and Quilt across 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2 and 26.3, with 1.1.2+26.3 as the latest file for both loaders.

What happens with modded worldgen content?

Where it meets content from other mods, the mod hands control back to the standard code path, although conflicts with other worldgen mods can still occur.

In the catalog

Material Rule Compiler is one of 3,545 Optimization mods on ModsFinder, and one of 2,575 Optimization mods for Fabric. 8,071 mods support Minecraft 26.3.
