World Importer

by Rolling-Catawa

World Importer lets players paste MCA region files from another world into the server or single-player world they are running, with the upload started from a configuration screen.

FabricForgeNeoForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.19 – 1.20.6

What it does

The mod is used to copy terrain from a separate save into the current one. The source is a local world's region folder containing MCA files, and the chunks in that folder are written over the matching chunks on the target world. Because existing chunks are overwritten, the mod suits areas where nothing has been built yet, or where the existing builds can be replaced. The author recommends making a backup before pasting.

The mod is installed on both the client and the server, and it works on Fabric, Forge and NeoForge. Its upload settings are reached by pressing the K key, which opens a configuration screen; with Mod Menu on Fabric, that screen is also accessible from the Mod Menu list. Commands used by the import require operator permissions at level 2. Files are published for 1.19 – 1.20.6 under the MIT License, and the code is open source.

Once an import finishes, lighting is recalculated and the affected chunks are updated and synced to players. During the upload, the top of the screen shows progress. Upload pace follows a configured interval, and automatic throttling lowers the rate when the server's ticks per second drop, with the maximum interval capped at 40 ticks.

Key features

  1. Region file upload

Local world MCA region files are sent to the server and written into its chunks, replacing what was there.

  2. Configuration screen

Pressing K opens a GUI where the source world is selected and the upload is started with a Start Upload button.

  3. Automatic throttling

The upload interval slows down when server ticks per second drop, so the game keeps running during a large import.

  4. Post-import updates

Lighting is recalculated and chunks are refreshed and synced after the import completes.

Use cases

Transplanting a build

A player moves a finished area from a single-player save onto a server, pasting it into a region that has no existing construction.

Restoring terrain

A server owner copies region files from a backup world back over damaged chunks in the live world.

Who it’s for: Server owners and players who keep a separate world with terrain or builds they want to copy into another world. Operators need level 2 permissions to run the commands.

Questions

Does World Importer need Architectury API?

Yes. Architectury API and Mod Menu are required dependencies, so both must be installed alongside World Importer.

Does World Importer have to be installed on the server?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Will the import erase existing builds?

It can. The mod writes MCA chunks directly over the server's region files, so existing builds in those chunks are overwritten. The author advises making a backup first.

What the author says

A Minecraft mod designed to upload and paste local world MCA region files to a server. The client parses MCA files, extracts NBT data chunk by chunk, and uploads it to the server. The server replaces chunks (blocks, biomes, block entities) in real-time without requiring a restart. After the import is complete, it…
