WaveAPI

by nullBlade

WaveAPI is a modding library whose API is meant to cover most of Minecraft, so that mods built on it need less code.

FabricForgeClient and serverMIT LicenseOpen source1.19.2 – 1.20.1

What it does

WaveAPI provides an abstraction layer over the game, so a mod author can write against one interface rather than the underlying game internals. The stated goal is to make modding simpler and to make porting a mod between loaders a smaller task. The library is published for Fabric and Forge, with files for 1.19.2, 1.19.4, 1.20 and 1.20.1, and the latest release, 0.3.1, dates from 2023-06-28.

WaveAPI is a client and server library, so the server and every player need it running. It is released under the MIT License and is open source, with public source code and a wiki. Potatoes (and their uses) requires WaveAPI, so installing that mod means installing this library as well.

On first launch WaveAPI creates a folder named waveAPI inside the Minecraft folder, which it uses for caching. Mods that are moved to the waveAPI/mods folder are loaded from there, and the folder has to exist before use, so players or server owners must create it by hand if it is missing. Deleting the modifcache.txt file inside that folder clears the texture cache when mods built on WaveAPI show textures incorrectly.

Key features

  1. Abstracted game API

The API covers most of the game, so mod code can avoid direct calls into the game internals.

  2. Texture cache reset

A modifcache.txt file in the waveAPI folder holds cached texture data, and deleting it clears the cache.

  3. Mod loading folder

Mods placed in the waveAPI/mods subfolder are loaded from there, which lets a player keep WaveAPI mods in one place.

Use cases

Who it’s for: WaveAPI suits mod authors who want one API for several loaders, and server owners who run mods that depend on it. Players mostly meet it as a dependency of other mods.

Questions

Which loaders does WaveAPI support?

WaveAPI has files for Fabric and Forge. Its latest Fabric file is 0.3.1 for 1.20.1, and its latest Forge file is 0.3.1 for 1.19.2.

Does WaveAPI have to be installed on the server?

Yes. Servers that run it need every player to install it too.

Why does a waveAPI folder appear in the Minecraft folder?

WaveAPI creates it for caching. Mods placed in its mods subfolder are loaded from there, and players who move mods manually must create that folder first.
